These dogs are considered one of the oldest French breeds with a muscular body and large head can be dated back to the 14th century in the southern region of France (Bordeaux) where it gets its name. Males can weigh over 100 lbs and females slightly under. Their coat is soft, short, and fine to the touch and coat color can range from light coppery red to a dark brownish red with black, brown or a red mask. The Bordeaux are powerful and were used for pulling carts and heavy objects. According to the AKC these dogs are known to be loyal, affectionate, and protective.
