Bernese Mountain Dog

Although powerfully built, these dogs are known for being affectionate and playful. Male average height is up to 27.5 inches and around 85-100 pounds. Females are slightly smaller and weigh between 75-90 pounds. Their coat is silky and thick so they naturally enjoy cold weather and are known for their distinct tri-color coat of black, white, and rust. Berners make nice family pets, are gentle with children, but can get attached to one family member. The breed was important to Switzerland farmers as their strength allowed them to pull more than their own weight and they could handle the mountainous terrain of the region.
